Australia: The Consumer Goods (Disposable Cigarette Lighters) Safety Standard 2019 published
March 2019 The Consumer Goods (Disposable Cigarette Lighters) Safety Standard 2019 was made on 13 February 2019, it sets out the mandatory requirements for the supply of disposable cigarette lighters.
The mandatory standard for disposable cigarette lighters includes:
- all disposable cigarette lighters
- novelty lighters
- certain refillable lighters.
The mandatory standard prescribes the requirements for:
- child resistance
- labelling
- testing and performance.
This mandatory standard includes a 12 month transition period to assist with the transition to the new mandatory standard
Up to 13 February 2020, suppliers have the option to comply with the requirements from either:
- the Consumer Goods (Disposable Cigarette Lighters) Safety Standard 2019, or
- the mandatory standard (2019) allows compliance with either of the:
- American standard, ASTM F400-10 Standard Consumer Safety Specifications for Lighters, or
- European standard, EN 13869:2016 Lighters – Child Safety Requirements for Lighters- Safety Requirements and Test Methods
- Trade Practices (Consumer Product Safety Standard) (Disposable Cigarette Lighters) Regulations 1997.
From 13 February 2020, suppliers must only comply with the requirements of the Consumer Goods (Disposable Cigarette Lighters) Safety Standard 2019.
Note: There is also a permanent ban on toy-like novelty cigarette lighters.
