Aggiornamenti normativi settoriali Automated vehicles take to public roads with the AV permit: a safety assessment method developed by TÜV SÜD
The automated driving team at TÜV SÜD has made great strides in the last few years to ensure the safety of automated cars on our roads and to foster the safe deployment of new automation technologies. But while the technology develops, the existing regulations still lag behind, making the approval of automated vehicles for public road usage challenging, but possible with a special permit. By supporting vehicle manufacturers, suppliers and mobility providers in the development of a new safety concept – or by validating their current one – our customers obtain a detailed report, which can help them demonstrate applied safety implementations when communicating with authorities and thus obtain their permit for operating their automated vehicles on public roads.
Any vehicle that touches streets used by the general public has to comply with official regulations that deem it safe to be driving amongst other vehicles and pedestrians. Consequently, Automated Vehicle (AV) technology also relies on approval from authorities based on official traffic acts and regulations. Therefore, AV participants such as vehicle manufacturers, suppliers and mobility providers have an urgent need to test their automated vehicles for SAE L3+ automation on public roads.
But existing regulations currently lag behind, no longer matching the automation level of today’s AV technology. To close this regulatory gap, we have therefore developed a service that provides a holistic safety evaluation to grant the AV permit to single prototype vehicles and prototype fleets.
