Voluntary product certification
Voluntary product certification is designed to enhance product value by enunciating the product’s peculiar characteristics in a technical document which serves as a basis for certification.
The selected certifiable features must differentiate the product from similar ones due to distinctive, significant characteristics; such features must be consistent, add value to the product and be measurable through objective parameters, possibly provable through analytical tests.
These characteristics often concern the absence of products or ingredients frequently viewed as undesirable by some consumers, such as for example Genetically Modified Organisms, preservatives, pesticides or substances causing food intolerances or allergies (e.g. gluten, lactose). In other cases the characteristics may be connected to technological parameters (e.g. drying temperatures, pasteurization) or places of origin (e.g. raw materials from Italy).

TÜV Italia formulates a three-yearly offer; following acceptance by the client it issues an order confirmation in order to initiate the certification process.
Compilation of a Technical Product Specification document (in Italian Disciplinare Tecnico di Prodotto – DTP)
The company produces a Technical Product Specification document providing all necessary information to evaluate the technical characteristics of the product in question as well as the company involved in product certification, technical production means, production flow, testing and monitoring plans (type tests, surveillance testing, monitoring procedures). Minimum Technical Product Specification requirements are defined in a document produced by TÜV Italia.
Once approved by TÜV Italia, the Technical Product Specification document becomes the basis for the specific product certification and causes the initiation of the certification procedure.
The initial audit includes an assessment of the production process and of those elements of the quality system affecting the product in question, as well as the collection of product samples for analytical tests, carried out every 6 months.
The certificate and the license to use the compliance mark are issued following on-site audits and the positive final resolution of the TÜV Italia Approval Committee.
Inspection audits are performed every 6 months for analytical tests and every 12 months for organizational, management and operational aspects.
In case of initial or yearly inspection audits, product sampling will be performed during on-site visits by TÜV Italia. Conversely, six-monthly inspections only involve product sampling for analytical testing. Such sampling takes place at the company’s premises or at specially selected sales outlets in order to ensure product availability.
