BRC Consumer Product certification
The BRC Global Standard - Consumer Products is designed to ensure that private label suppliers operate according to best practices and are capable of offering safe products in compliance to contract and regulatory requirements, thus meeting legal obligations and ensuring consumer protection.
The standard applies to companies supplying UK large-scale retailers with non-food private label products such as personal care products, cleaning products, stationery, interior decor, household appliances, etc. and is normally a basic requirement to export such goods. European large-scale retailers that support the BRC Consumer Products standard include Tesco, Sainsbury and Knight International.
As an Accredia-accredited body under EN 45011 for BRC Food certification, TÜV Italia is authorized by the standard owners to perform BRC Consumer Products standard verifications through qualified auditors.

Evaluation and report production
The BRC Consumer Products standard requires the following:
- adoption of a documented quality management system;
- controls on production environment, products, process and personnel;
- adoption of a risk and hazard management system.
The evaluation aims at placing emphasis on the actual risk connected to using a particular product, which can be classified according to 4 different risk levels; each supplieris evaluated based on the requirements associated to the assigned risk level. In order to define their own risk level (Product Group), companies may follow a decision-making process summarized in a decision-making tree. The BRC website provides some directions as to the application of the so-called “Product Group Decision Tree”.
Once the audit is completed, TÜV Italia produces a report in the format required by BRC based on the assigned Product Group.
Prior to issuing the certificate, TÜV Italia performs the following actions:
- management of any deficiencies found (implementation schedule and methods, verification of closure if required);
- final resolution by the TÜV Italia Approval Committee.
BRC Consumer Products certification can be used by large-scale distribution suppliers as proof of conformity in order to be included in the supplier portfolio of large-scale retailers.
The certification is followed by inspection audits according to the frequency required by the standard and based on the identified Product Group and related risk level.
